In Mac OS and Mac OS X, most windows havewidgets on their upper left, upper right, and lower right corners.Each performs a specific task, as follows:

Mac OS X

A box is a type of view that creates distinct, logical groupings of controls, text fields, and other interface elements. For example, a preferences window may include boxes that visually group related settings together.   • Close button: Located in the upper left corner ofthe window, the Close button is a red sphere. When you move your mouseover it, it displays an X. When you click the Close button,its window closes.
  • Minimize button: Located in the upper left cornerof the window, to the right of the Close button, the Minimize buttonis a yellow sphere. When you move your mouse over it, it displays a- (minus sign). When you click the Minimize button, it willcollapse the window into the Dock.
  • Zoom button: Located in the upper left corner, tothe right of the Minimize button, the Zoom button is a green sphere.When you move your mouse over it, it displays a + (plussign). If you click it once, the window will expand so that all of theitems contained within it are displayed. If you click the button asecond time, its window will return to its original size.
  • Size box: Located in the lower right corner, theSize box looks like three parallel lines at an angle. If you clickand drag this box, you can change the size of its window.
  • Toolbar button: Located in the upper right cornerof the window, the Toolbar button is a lozenge-shaped button the samecolor as the menu bar. If you click it, it will hide or reveal theapplication's toolbar. It is not available with all programs.

Mac OS 9.x and earlier

  • Close box: Located in the upper left corner ofthe window, the Close box is an empty square. When you click theClose box, its window closes.
  • Zoom box: Located in the upper right corner, theZoom box is a square with a smaller square inside it. If you click itonce, it will expand so that all of the items contained within itswindow are displayed. If you click it a second time, its window willreturn to its original size. In Mac OS 8.0 and later, the Zoom box islocated to the left of the Collapse box.
  • Collapse box: Located in the upper right cornerto the right of the Zoom box, the Collapse box is a square with anarrow rectangle bisecting it into upper and lower halves. If youclick it once, its window will collapse to just a title bar. When youclick it again, the window will return to normal. The Collapse box isavailable only in Mac OS 8.0 and later.
  • Size box: Located in the lower right corner, theSize box looks like either a small square overlapping a larger square(Mac OS 7.6.1 and earlier) or three parallel lines at an angle (Mac OS8.0 and later). If you click and drag this box, you can change thesize of its window.
